1953

By 1953, customizers were experimenting with grille designs like never before, mixing pieces from multiple makes or fabricating entirely new assemblies. The futuristic lines of Detroit’s concept cars, featuring plexiglass tops, dual headlights, and aircraft-inspired fins, filtered into the custom scene, pushing builders toward bolder, show-focused creations. Magazines like Rod & Custom and Car Craft were now firmly established, feeding the public’s appetite for radical new ideas.
One of the biggest stories of the year was the Hirohata Merc’s cross-country journey. Having won show trophies all over California, Bob Hirohata decided to drive his low-slung ’51 Mercury to the 4th annual Indianapolis Custom Show. Just days before leaving, he replaced its Flathead with a brand-new 1953 Cadillac V8, chronicling the trip in Rod & Custom under the title “Kross Kountry In A Kustom.” The car’s slammed stance caused minor headaches, but Hirohata simply removed one set of lowering blocks for the ride home. The trip helped spread California’s sleek, low-slung style to enthusiasts across the nation.
Meanwhile, Rod & Custom launched its “Dream Truck” project, using Spencer Murray's 1950 Chevrolet as a rolling laboratory that readers could help design. Shops across California contributed everything from chopped tops to quad headlights, and each new stage was documented in the magazine. By year’s end, it was clear that custom culture was no longer confined to local clubs. Its influence was crossing state lines just as easily as the cars themselves.
