Modesto is a city in California. Legendary kustom car builder Gene Winfield opened his first custom shop, Windy's Custom Shop, behind his mothers house on 1309 Figaro Avenue in Modesto. Modesto was also the home of the Century Toppers car club. A club that Gene Winfield formed with some local hot rodders in 1946.
Gene and his fellow club members used to race out on Paradise Road in Modesto. Later on they had a country road out by Empire that they used. They would go at night and do all kinds of racing. They marked off a 1/4 mile and a full mile track. They tok off with a rolling start, and people would go down and wait in a driveway to watch the racers come by.
When Gene and his buddies were not busy racing, they would cruise on 10th street. In the beginning it was only 10th back and forth. Later on they opened it up and made 10th one way. Then they took 11th back and made a loop. They would go down and around Burge's Drive in and then go back. Go down the other way around the Grey Hound and Pep Boys, before turning around and go back.
