"I was inspired by Westergard, the Calori Coupe, of course early Barris, and also a Robert Williams poster when I designed the coupe," Fish told Sondre Kvipt of Kustomrama in 2019. Jack Calori's 1936 Ford iconic 3-Window Coupe served as inspiration for Fish during the build. Completed in 1948, the Calori Coupe was built by Jack Calori and Herb Reneau.

1936 Ford 3-Window Coupe owned by Burbank Choppers member Jon "Fish" Fisher of Burbank, California.


The Westergard Look

Jon bought the coupe from Mark Kurtz in 1995. "I was inspired by Westergard, the Calori Coupe, of course early Barris, and also a Robert Williams poster when I designed the coupe," Fish told Sondre Kvipt of Kustomrama in 2019. Van Nuys customizer Scott Guildner had helped Aaron Kahan chop his coupe prior to the build, so Fish commissioned him to do the metal work on the 36 as well.[1] Guildner chopped the top on the car. 3 1/4 inches were taken out of the A-pillars, while 3 3/4 inches were taken out in the back of the roof. The front was then modified to accept a 1940 LaSalle grille and sunken in and molded 1939 Buick headlights. 1941 Ford bumpers were installed front and back, and the stock taillights were shaved and replaced with taillights that were integrated into 1946 Ford bumper guards. Other modifications included shaved door handles and deck lid.[2]


Eggplant and Oxblood

Once the bodywork was completed, Jon's coupe received a glossy Eggplant paint job. It was dressed up with 1940 Ford teardrop style fenderskirts and single bar flipper hubcaps. Inside, it received an Oxblood Red tuck and roll upholstery by Willy Sopher and a 1937 Lincoln Zephyr dashboard. A 1940 Ford steering column with a 1950 Ford Crestliner steering wheel was also installed. A modern 350 cu in Chevrolet engine and a 350 automatic transmission were chosen for driveability. The build was completed in 1996.[2]


"Best Custom" at the 1999 Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend

In 1999 Fish won the "Best Custom" award with the coupe at the 2nd annual Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend car show. Hosted by the Shifters car club of Southern California, there were about 120 cars attending the show.[3]


A Keeper

Jon still owned the coupe in 2019. "It's a keeper," he told Sondre. "My dream car! I would never sell it."[1]
