Hot Rod Empire by Matt Stone details Robert E. Petersen's creation of Hot Rod Magazine in the 1940s and the Petersen Publishing empire that grew to the mainstream juggernaut we know today. Click here to order the book from Amazon.com.

Hot Rod Magazine was launched by Trend in January 1948. The very first Hot Rod Magazine was created as the program for the first annual Hot Rod Exposition at the National Guard Armory in Los Angeles, California. The magazine sold ads to whoever wanted to display as a vendor and hawking copies on the steps outside the Armory.[1]

At the time Hot Rod Magazine was founded there weren't any other Hot Rod related magazines published. SCTA had an event program, but it wasn't a magazine. Veda Orr was also running the SCTA Newsletter that she sent out during the war to GIs telling them what was happening with other hot rodders. There were also Throttle Magazine that was published from January to December 1941.[1]

It was Robert E. Petersen that had the idea about starting Hot Rod Magazine. A lot of other people were involved in the process, but Robert had the idea and was responsible for establishing the magazine. Bob Lindsay was a confounder of the magazine. Robert had previously worked with Bob at the Hollywood Publicity Associates as a P.R. guy.[1]

The first Hot Rod Magazine was printed in 10,000 copies. Bob and Robert did everything together. Bob was mostly the business manager, and Robert became the sales guy and photographer.[1] Lee Blaisdell, who had been shooting SCTA racing before Hot Rod Magazine was founded helped out with photos for the newborn magazine. Lee shot the first six covers for the magazine. These photos were processes at the Alan Dean Studio at 9161 Sunset Boulevard. In 1948, Lee moved away, and Robert Petersen hired Eric Rickman to take photos for the magazine.[2]
