Don Heckman
Don Heckman is a well-known custom painter. In the early 1970s he worked alongside Walt Prey, contributing to many iconic designs that came out of their shared studio in the San Fernando Valley. One of their most renowned joint projects was the painting of the Gypsy Rose lowrider, which gained significant acclaim within the custom car community. In addition to the Gypsy Rose, the duo also worked on the decoration of Walt Prey's personal 1955 Chevrolet, which was later known as "Peaches and Cream." This particular project highlighted their penchant for intricate designs, featuring vibrant seaweed style flames and meticulous pinstriping, a trademark of their combined artistic styles.[1]
Though often overshadowed by the luminary Walt Prey, Don Heckman's contributions to the custom car culture were significant. His attention to detail and a deep understanding of the evolving automotive aesthetics of the time ensured that his work, though sometimes less credited, remained influential and celebrated by those in the know.[1]
