Walt Prey's 1955 Chevrolet - Peaches and Cream
1955 Chevrolet owned by Walt Prey of Walt's Custom Studio in Van Nuys, California. Named "Peaches and Cream," Walt's Chevrolet stands out for its unique design and history. Painted by Walt and Don Heckman in the 1970s, it featured signature seaweed style flames and detailed pinstriping as a tribute to the custom painters of the 1950s.[1]
Walt and Don were renowned for their work in the custom car realm, and they painted numerous famous cars, including the celebrated Gypsy Rose lowrider. With its vibrant flames and meticulous pinstriping, Walt's Chevrolet is a striking representation of 1970s Low Rider era aesthetics. Although the car didn't run hydraulic lifts, there has been some debate over its exact categorization — whether it's a lowrider, semi-custom, or something else — it does bear features characteristic of the era, including Cragar SS wheels and the iconic flames.[2]
Legacy and Recent Recognition
The car's legacy was immortalized in a series of photos taken by Howard Gribble, a seasoned custom car enthusiast and photographer who documented the LA car scene from the early 1960s through the 1970s. Further showcasing its influence and popularity, it graced the album cover of a 1972 record by the band Joe Joe Gunne. In 2023, 51 years later, the car was featured in the artwork for the Ventura Nationals car show. Brent Patton, a respected artist from Northern California, produced the artwork.[2]
