Stanley Bennett's 1950 Mercury
1950 Mercury owned and built by Stanley Bennett of Oregon. In 1957, Stanley's ride was featured in "Out of the 48" section in Rod & Custom January 1957. Stan worked as a paratrooper in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, and he built the car when he was stationed there. The grille was made from two 1953 Chevrolet grilles with 1951 Ford spinners. The body was nosed, decked and shaved for door handles. The front hood corners were rounded, and air scoops were made on top of the frenched headlights, almost similar to the 1955 Pontiac. The side trim was removed and flared fender skirts with a scoop effect worked into their leading edges were installed. The car was painted black lacquer and was given the name Scorpe. The build cost Stan $400 to complete.[1]
