Karl Zipf's 1930 Ford
1930 Ford Model-A Coupe owned and built by Karl Zipf of San Francisco, California. Karl bought the car in 1958, the car was pretty beaten up, however a deal was made and Karl brought the $30 Coupe home to his garage. The top was chopped 4 inches and the body was channeled 5 inches. A handmade one-piece nose and hood section with small handmade grille and scoops in top was installed a quite unique addition. A chromed 1937 Ford V8-60 panel truck tube axle and springs were installed and with a pair 1948 Mercury front wheels. In the rear, Chrysler wheels were fit with Bruce slicks. The rear push-bar encircled the 1939 Ford rear end fit with Halibrand quick change gears. The coupe was powered by a 283 cui 1957 Chevrolet mill. The engine was hopped up with an Harman & Collins roller cam and J. E. dome pistons. Enough spark was provided by a Vertex magneto while the gas was insure by four cars mounted on an Edelbrock six jug manifold. The Chevy engine was connected to a 1939 Ford transmission. The clutch and flywheel were Schieffer units. A bubble on the left side of the cowl was built out to protect the chromed drag link. The Zolotoned interior featured a Franklin center steering kit and a minimum of gauges.[1]
In January of 1959, Karl's coupe was shown at the 4th annual San Mateo Custom, Rod & Sports Car Show.
