Eric Goodrich's Iron Lung
The body on the Iron Lung started out as a 1965 Ford Thunderbird roof skin, quarters, trunk lid, door skins and two sets of front fenders. The upper headlight pod was constructed using the Thunderbird headlight bezel and 8 gauge steel. The lower headlight pod was made from 18 gauge steel and 3/8" round bar. The rear taillights were made from a cut down taillight unit with one red lense.
Eric fabricated a custom Z'd 2x6 and 2x4 frame for the car. The frame featured custom rear hair pin suspension and an 8 3/4 Mopar sure grip rear end. The front suspension ran a stock drilled Ford Model A axle with F 100 brakes and aluminum drums. A 1967 Plymouth Barracuda steering box was installed along with a stainless steel steering column. A center counsel was made from a 1959 Edsel taillight bezel. The bubbletop controls featured a 12 volt air pump, and a one gallon air tank that was run through two air solenoids that were controlled by chromed 12 volt push starter buttons. The bubble, mount ring and hinge mechanism were hand made by Eric using 4 gas grills and a heat box with compressed air. A 440 Mopar motor and transmission were installed along with a tunnel ram that ran two 600 cfm Holleys, a 65000 volt HEI distributor, and custom built headers. The transmission was a stock 727 TorqueFlite transmission. The build was started in 2011 and completed in 2015. In 2017 Eric told Kustomrama that he was never really into Bubbletops; "I just set out to build the hardest thing I could think of."
