Don Varner
Don Varner of Eugene, Oregon. Don started out pinstriping in Eugene in the 1950s. In 1956 he was hailed by Rod & Custom Magazine as the striping king of the Northwest. Later on, he moved to Salinas, California where he began designing and painting cars.
Don went on to become an industrial designer by day and an awesome automobile designer by night. He is a designer whose love of automobiles and good design are one in the same. With a relentless level of desire, Don has been able to achieve a unique statement of going in style. The California Star is the third collaboration between Don and Ron Covell. 5,000 man-hours spanning almost three years went into the creation of this ground-up custom. The California Star began traditionally enough, based on a `27 Model T ragtop. Other influences in the California Star's design were track roadsters and Indy championship cars, but the end result is an original, unique show car.
