Craft of Speed is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the journey of Shige Suganuma and Chico Kodama, two Japanese and Japanese American hot rodders who revitalized the iconic American speed equipment company, Mooneyes. The film delves into their efforts to preserve founder Dean Moon's legacy and popularize hot rod culture in Asia.[1]

Synopsis

Over three decades, Suganuma and Kodama dedicated themselves to rescuing Moon Equipment Company, rebranding it as Mooneyes, and promoting hot rod culture across Asia. As pioneers in their industry, they faced challenges related to racism and xenophobia but ultimately cultivated a global following. The documentary also highlights Suganuma's endeavors to sustain interest in hot rodding amid declining enthusiasm and Kodama's pursuit of a second land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats.[1]

Production

Directed by Ming Lai, "Craft of Speed" is both a documentary film and a photography series, featuring images of the historic Mooneyes Machine Shop and Kodama's handcrafted rear-engine modified roadster. The project explores the Japanese concept of "wabi-sabi," finding beauty in imperfection and age.[1]

Screenings and Release

The documentary has been showcased at various venues, including a special screening at the Segerstrom Shelby Event Center in Irvine, California, on November 16, 2024.[2]

Critical Reception

"Craft of Speed" has been recognized for its insightful portrayal of the fusion between American and Japanese hot rodding cultures. Elana Scherr, Senior Editor at Car and Driver, noted that the film tells the story of Dean Moon's first speed shop and how Suganuma and Kodama are continuing his legacy.[3]
