The history of custom cars dates back to the early 20th century, when wealthy owners commissioned one-off bodies from coachbuilders to reflect personal style. But the modern custom car movement began in the 1930s and 1940s, as young enthusiasts, especially in California, started modifying mass-produced cars to improve their looks. Early customizers like Harry Westergard and George Barris pioneered techniques such as chopping tops, shaving trim, and adding fender skirts. By the 1950s, custom cars were a full-blown cultural phenomenon, showcased in magazines, car shows, and Hollywood films. The movement continues to evolve, rooted in creativity, craftsmanship, and individuality.
