Lou Baney was a mechanic at Ansen Automotive Engineering, treasurer and president of Rusetta Timing Association, and a member of the board of directors and vice president for the American Hot Rod Conference.[1] Lou was also a member of the L.A. Gophers Car Club. At the age of 19 Lou built his first hot rod, a 1932 Ford V8 Roadster, that he frequently raced at Carrel Speedway against such future big-name racers as Jack McGrath and Andy Linden. Baney built and drove the first coupes ever to exceed the speeds of 125, 130, and 135 mph.[2]

Lou is listed as an entrant in the roadster class at the El Mirage August 18, 1946 SCTA time trials event. He ran as a member of the Gophers car club at the event.[3]

In 1948 Lou led a team of hot rodders building the "Door Prize" car at the first annual Hot Rod Exposition.

At the Ansen Automotive plant in Los Angeles Baney built engines that were shipped all over the world.[2]

Lou later become a member of the Culver City Screwdrivers Car Club.[4]
