Joe's first car was a scalloped 1947 Chevrolet convertible that he bought for 75.00 USD in 1958; "I was 14 years old, the car was stock otherwise. It didn't run needed a carb, I started learning," Joe told Sondre Kvipt of Kustomrama in 2016. A painter near North High laid the Candy Red and Pearl White Scallop paint job on the car before Joe bought it. " I can't remember his name, but he was painting from his body shop on 182nd street. Not a custom shop, he just painted this one for advertisement of his talent. He was the cousin of Tony and Chuck Gaetani. A high school buddy, Mickey Vandevort, did the striping for me." Joe did drive the car, but not much because he didn't have a license. After the Chevrolet followed a 1940 Mercury coupe and a 1950 Ford, all before he was 16; "I convinced my parents I would be a mechanic."
