Jim Hurley was a member of the Renegades Car Club of Long Beach, California. Jim's first car was a 1941 Ford coupe that he customized mildly.

Jim's parents, Russ and Bess Wright, were in the upholstery business. They had a shop together with Tom Kelly and Dick Jackson called Custom City. Jim was the metal man for Dick. He would teach Automotives at La Habra high school during the day, and do bodywork for Dick Jackson at night.[1]
